She's giving me that Evil Eye

Have been busy doing handwork on the Starbuck Mermaid. I really hate doing handstitching but I love the look that it gives to the piece...Pamela Allen's ladder stitch does add so much to the raw edge appliques of the piece...it is like adding a line....I love her work, by the way she has a new DVD out that is called Thinking Like An Artist, and it gives you a peek into her mind as she produces an art piece...She also did an online class this year which I was lucky to take...so her work and her style have made an impression on me.

If you are new to my blog...you can go back in older posts to Jan 2008, Feb 2008 and see how the stitching does make a difference. I also used this stitching on my Rusty Old Woman piece.

I decided not to post pictures until old Starbucks is complete..she keeps talking to me telling me what she needs, what she wants and I am having to move slower than I want too...right now she is requiring "wild hair made from silk stitched cords", I don't think she realizes how much work that is...right now we are at odds with each other...my hubby tells me she is giving me that evil stare...so perhaps her eyes need reworking...I think she is giving me that look because I am fighting her on her hair request...stay tune for the finished piece and see who wins out...

Miss Nixie, are you really NAUGHTY?

My next piece came to me late last night when I couldn't fall asleep. I have found that I usually follow through with a piece if I put it down in writing on my blog because there it is...it has been announced and now I need to complete it.

I still have lots of rusted fabric...was going to do a piece of my hubby naked taking a dip to hang beside my Old Rusty Woman piece.... was going to call it The Rusty Old Man...but he made his wishes very clear...NO WAY ANN! So I decided that I would do a mermaid. I have always been fascinated with the story of the mermaid logo on Starbuck Coffee. I love her split tail. I did a little research and found the original block print image.

Background History

Melusine (or Melusina) is a figure of European legends and folklore, a feminine spirit of fresh waters in sacred springs and rivers.
She is usually depicted as a woman who is a
serpent or fish (much like a mermaid) from the waist down. She is also sometimes illustrated with wings, two tails or both, and sometimes referred to as a nixie.

Over the years Starbuck has altered their logo so that you see a slender Nixie and her breasts aren't exposed, they are covered by long wavy hair and you only see a small portion of her split tail. Seems the split tail causes some naughty thoughts. I like naughty, I can do naughty...I am almost 65...I can do anything I want! So Miss Nixie here I come....stay tune for progress.

The Rusty Woman Makes Her "Rustiness" Appearance

She is complete and ready to take that dip on her 65th birthday. I think sunset would be the best time, less folks on the beach to view her rusty beauty in late February. Realize the water will be a wee bit chilly...but making it to 65 is a major event, and a little chill is no big thing or perhaps it may be a big thing.

Definition of RUSTY:

* to become corroded * to deteriorate or degenerate through inactivity or neglect * weakened or impaired by neglect, disuse, or lack of practice * working or operating stiffly, or incorrectly because of rust

That pretty much desribes this old body of mine.

If you would like to read about the making of this piece check on the right side of blog for past entries on the rust dyeing of fabric, the building of her piece by piece, etc. It was a lot of fun making this piece.
